About the Porirua RSA Pool Section:
The Porirua RSA Pool Section consists of members who just enjoy a good game of pool and those who enjoy the social aspect of playing home and/or away events. We also have some serious events for those who prefer a more competitive to edge to their game.
The Pool Section has evolved over the years and has remained one of the most consistent groups within the RSA along with the Women’s Section. Over the years there has been strong input from many individuals within the RSA, to name a few, Robbie Nathan, Kevin Olsen and Sonny Thompson who have guided it through the years, evolving from the days when it was The Commodores and was funded by the RSA Committee. Today we are a self funding group gratefully helped by our members who support our raffles.
Unfortunately our social calendar has dropped off due to the poor state of a lot of other organisations we used to have regular contact with. We have however remained strong due to the continued effort of our players to maintain a high standard.
Events and Initiatives:
We currently compete in the Greater Wellington pool competition, a new initiative that was instigated last year. We were competitive last year and hope to improve this year. Later in the year we will compete in the annual Speights tournament which we have at times hosted (due to winning the event the year before) this year it is being held at the Johnsonville RSA. We also play regular reciprocal games against the Titahi Bay RSA and the Hills 16 Bar.
We welcome enquiries from other clubs.
Throughout the year we play numerous in-house competitions such as the Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s and Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. There are also memorial trophies contested such as the Frank Crane Trophy and the Roy Holland trophy which also includes Darts and Indoor Bowls and teams consist of three players. These are all played under the Chartered Club rules which our members recently elected to adopt.
House keeping:
Our tables are Pot Black competition tables and we have two situated in the main bar.
They have light meters which allow 2-3 games play for $1. Lights must be on at all times during play. Children are not permitted to play on the tables. Secondary school aged children may play if accompanied at the table by an adult.
All members are welcome to play, just keep an eye on the pool notice board and the online events calendar. Contacts are Chris Smith and John Rawlings.
